Madeira parliament approves lower IRS income tax rates
Income tax withheld from residents' pay in Madeira falls from November, after a unanimous vote in the regional parliament.
The Legislative Assembly of Madeira on Tuesday, 27 October, unanimously approved the Regional Government's proposal to change IRS income tax rates for residents of the region.
The change follows the recent cut in national IRS rates. It keeps a reduction of up to 30% in every bracket compared with the rates on the mainland. The new rates apply from November salaries, once new withholding tables are published.
According to DN Madeira, the Regional Government estimates the measure will cut its revenue by 5.6 million euros in 2026. The whole parliamentary process, from presentation to the final vote, took place on the same day.
Opposition parties used the debate to call for a cut in VAT. IL deputy Gonçalo Maia Camelo gave the example of a saving of one euro a month, or a little more than five euros for someone earning 1500 euros a month, DN Madeira reported.
In the same session, the assembly approved in general terms a proposal changing the protection rules for regional roads. It covers construction, advertising, vegetation and other work near the roads. PSD, PS and CDS-PP voted in favour, and JPP, Chega, IL and the independent deputy abstained.
In September this site reported that Madeira would apply an IRS withholding cut in November.
