A September deal between a Funchal service club and a hotel group puts the Pico Ruivo route at Paul da Serra in their care, building on a July protocol with the IFCN.

Volunteers from the Rotary Club of Funchal and a PortoBay Group team cleaned a stretch of the Vereda do Pico Ruivo do Paul da Serra in the Estanquinhos area on Tuesday 20 October. It was the first joint work under an agreement that commits the two to the conservation and maintenance of the walking trail for the next three years.

Kai Hagenbuch, president of the Rotary Club of Funchal, and José Carlos Silva, the PortoBay Group director responsible for projects and sustainability, signed the agreement on 22 September at the Porto Mare offices in Funchal.

It follows a protocol the Rotary Club signed on 6 July with the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), which covers the management, improvement, signposting and maintenance of the trail.

The work aims to improve walking conditions and safety for hikers and to protect the vegetation along the route. According to JM Madeira, the Rotary Club links the partnership to its motto for the 2026/2027 Rotary year, Create Lasting Impact.
