What to do when it is not calm

  • Heavy rain closes the levadas and the ER roads in the north. Pick a coastal walk on the south side, a museum or a swim in a lido, and do not drive the mountain passes.
  • A gale means flight diversions: planes land in Porto Santo or the Canaries and come back hours later. Check your flight before you leave the hotel, and allow extra time for the airport bus.
  • An orange sea warning means no swimming and closed promenades, including the natural pools in Porto Moniz. Stay well back from the rocks: rogue waves take people off them every winter.
