Car hire in Madeira
Live prices from local and international rental companies, at the airport (FNC) and in town, in one list. Pick up and return the car where it suits you; you book with our partner DiscoverCars at the price shown here.
Before you book
Book an automatic early
The island roads are steep, narrow and full of hill starts. If you do not drive a manual every day, take an automatic, and book it early: they are the first cars to go in summer.
Know the excess
The basic cover in the price leaves an excess, the sum you pay if the car is damaged, often 1,000 to 2,500 euros. Either take the desk's own cover, or a full coverage policy that refunds it, and know which before you arrive.
Bring a credit card
Most desks block the deposit on a credit card in the main driver's name. Debit cards, prepaid cards and cards from online-only banks are often refused; the details of each offer say what its desk accepts.
Terminal desk or shuttle
A desk in the terminal is the quickest start. A shuttle desk is usually cheaper and a few minutes away by minibus; its instructions say where to wait.
