JPP Criticizes Government Over Health System Failures

The opposition party Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) has criticized the Regional Government and SESARAM for the paralysis of examination rooms and the postponement of urgent and oncological medical procedures. This situation is attributed to a policy focused on propaganda and chronic underinvestment in human capital, according to JPP.

Patrícia Spínola of JPP stated that new X-ray equipment has been installed in local health centers, yet they remain unused due to a lack of Superior Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technicians. She pointed out the incoherencies in the PSD/CDS governance, stating that purchasing advanced technology without hiring necessary professionals wastes public money.

The absence of technical direction in radiology and the inability to replace professionals on medical leave have left Porto Santo in a critical state. JPP also noted that SESARAM's approach to salary devaluation and career precariousness drives technicians to the private sector or emigration, severely impacting users.

JPP specified that the unused X-ray equipment is in health centres in Machico, Calheta and São Vicente. The party also said the prolonged lack of technical leadership in radiology and failure to replace staff on sick leave had led to responsibility waivers and physical and psychological exhaustion among teams.

According to JPP, residents outside Funchal now have to travel to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for basic examinations. It also said the announcement of new recruitment competitions came only in response to union and political pressure.
