JPP Demands Answers on Healthcare Response Times in Madeira

The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has publicly expressed concerns over the failure to adhere to the maximum response times in Madeira's healthcare services. This issue, according to JPP, signifies a systemic neglect of patient rights, leading to increasingly lengthy waiting lists and insufficient oversight of healthcare service delivery.

During a press conference held at the Santa Cruz Health Centre, Lina Pereira, the Vice-President of the JPP parliamentary group, announced that the party will formally question the Regional Government, SESARAM, and IASAÚDE regarding the measures in place to address delays beyond the legally established timeframes.

Pereira highlighted the gravity of the situation during a recent debate on the State of the Region, where she questioned the Regional Secretary of Health about troubling health indicators but received no satisfactory response. She criticized the Secretary for maintaining a 'complicit silence' that worsens conditions for patients.

The most recent data reveals an alarming increase in the number of patients on waiting lists, with over 146,000 individuals awaiting surgeries, consultations, or specialized exams. This figure marks the highest in the past decade, affecting both Madeira and Porto Santo residents.

Pereira emphasized that patients are often unaware of their rights, which include access to information about their position on waiting lists and the assurance of treatment within the Maximum Guaranteed Response Time (TMRG). "Even while waiting, patients have rights," she stated. "They are entitled to know their situation and expect timely clinical responses as per the law."

The JPP's call to action underscores the critical need for transparency and accountability within Madeira's healthcare system, particularly in ensuring that patients receive timely and adequate care.
