JPP conference on ferry link set for Funchal on 9 September

JPP will hold a conference on "Ferry e Continuidade Territorial" at Centro IDEIA in Funchal on 9 September, starting at 9:00, according to DNOTICIAS. Isabel Santos, coordinator of the party's Office of Studies and Strategy, organised the initiative.

The conference will analyse the economic and financial study on a regular ferry link between Madeira and mainland Portugal, DNOTICIAS reported.

Élvio Sousa said the document shows that Madeirans want to restore a regular maritime connection, but said the analysis has weaknesses. He criticised the weight given to freight transport, arguing that cargo should be the business, complemented by passengers. He said the study's limit of 40 cargo units or trucks per trip was one of its serious weaknesses.

Sousa recalled a 2021 trip to the Canary Islands, where he met maritime operators to contest the idea that a regular link is not economically sustainable. He said JPP's policy is to restore a regular maritime link between Madeira and mainland Portugal and that, if JPP forms the government, there will be a ferry throughout the year.
