Vereda da Encumeada

IFCN notice (in Portuguese): O troço restante do PR 1.3, entre a Boca das Torrinhas e a Encumeada, continuará encerrado. A partir da Boca das Torrinhas será possível prosseguir a caminhada através do PR 2 Vereda do Urzal, em direção ao Curral das Freiras ou à Boaventura.

The ridge route west from the Pico Ruivo shelter to the Encumeada pass, 11.2 km with five hours of walking time. It runs high the whole way, between 1764 m and 1009 m, along the crest that divides the north of the island from the south. Long, remote and point to point, so weather and transport both need settling first.

Before you go

  • Walking a classified trail requires a paid reservation through the regional SIMplifica portal. The official trail pages list the fee as 4.50 € per visitor over 12; children of 12 and under are exempt. Book before you set off. Reserve on SIMplifica
  • This route starts and finishes in different places, so settle how you will get back before you set off.
  • The route reaches 1764 m. Cloud, wind and temperature at that height are often nothing like the coast.
