Vereda da Ilha

The northern descent from the Pico Ruivo shelter down to the village of Ilha above Santana. Over 8.2 km the route loses more than 1200 m, from 1764 m to 490 m, which is why IFCN still allows three hours for it. Walked downhill it is a long knee test; walked the other way it is a serious climb.

  • This route starts and finishes in different places, so settle how you will get back before you set off.
  • The route reaches 1764 m. Cloud, wind and temperature at that height are often nothing like the coast.
