In 2024, the Autonomous Region of Madeira experienced a noteworthy shift in workplace safety dynamics. While the overall number of workplace accidents decreased by 3.2%, from 4,320 in 2023 to 4,181, the region saw a concerning rise in fatal accidents, increasing from three to five.
According to the latest data released by the Direção Regional do Trabalho and the Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira (DREM), the construction sector remains the most hazardous, accounting for 22.1% of all incidents, with 923 recorded accidents. This sector's notorious reputation for workplace dangers continues to be a significant issue for local authorities.
Additionally, the manufacturing industries reported the highest absolute increase in accidents, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures and strict adherence to regulatory protocols. The rise in fatal accidents has reignited discussions among policymakers and industry leaders about improving safety standards and compliance.
