Over the past weekend, the island of Madeira witnessed a series of incidents that kept emergency services on high alert. From car fires to road accidents, the local authorities were fully engaged in managing these emergencies.
Car Fire in Funchal
On Saturday afternoon, a car caught fire on Avenida LuĂs de Camões, near a popular supermarket in Funchal. The alert was raised at 2:20 PM, prompting the rapid deployment of the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal. By the time the 11 firefighters arrived with three vehicles, the flames had already been extinguished, preventing further damage.
Brush Fire Near Machico Health Center
Earlier, on Friday, a brush fire erupted in a vacant lot near the Machico Health Center. The Bombeiros Municipais de Machico responded swiftly with five firefighters and two vehicles, effectively containing the fire and averting any threat to nearby buildings.
Road Accidents Complicate Traffic
The weekend also saw several traffic incidents. On Friday, a collision between a motorcycle and a car on Rua 31 de Janeiro left a 33-year-old man injured. He sustained abrasions on his elbow and leg and was transported to the Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça for treatment.
Another incident occurred on Thursday in Gaula, where a car overturned on Estrada Padre Alfredo Vieira de Freitas. The 76-year-old driver managed to exit the vehicle on his own but complained of back pain. He was also taken to the Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça for medical attention.
These incidents underscore the importance of road safety and the readiness of Madeira’s emergency services to respond to crises quickly and efficiently.
