Vereda do Pico do Areeiro Set to Reopen on June 26 without Restrictions
Madeira GuideThe iconic PR1 trail, Vereda do Pico do Areeiro, will fully reopen to the public on June 26, allowing unrestricted access daily, following enhancement works.
The much-anticipated reopening of the Vereda do Pico do Areeiro, one of Madeira's most celebrated hiking trails, is set for June 26th. The trail, known as PR1, will be accessible without any restrictions, marking a significant milestone in the island's tourism and nature conservation efforts.
This announcement comes from the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), which has been overseeing enhancement works on the trail. Until June 25th, the trail will remain closed from Monday to Thursday, opening only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays to allow for the completion of ongoing improvements.
From June 26th, visitors will enjoy daily access to the trail, maintaining the one-way traffic system between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo. This system was implemented to enhance safety following a previous landslide at the site.
However, a temporary closure is planned in September for the installation of a walkway. The trail will be closed on September 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th, as well as on September 21st and 22nd. Post these dates, regular operations will resume, ensuring continuous access for both residents and tourists.
The IFCN also emphasizes that access to the PR1 trail requires prior registration through the Simplifica platform, highlighting the importance of managing visitor numbers to preserve the trail's condition and safety.
These measures are part of broader efforts to enhance the quality and safety of the trail, which remains a highlight for nature lovers visiting the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
