The transport and logistics group plans a warehouse for food, electronics and medicines that would also handle home deliveries across Madeira.

The Torrestir group is studying an investment of about 30 million euros in a new logistics centre in Câmara de Lobos. Executive director Luís Torres and group chairman Fernando Torres presented the project on the morning of 29 October to the Regional Secretary for the Economy, José Manuel Rodrigues. Gonçalo Pimenta, president of Madeira Parques Empresariais, also attended.

Luís Torres said the project is still at the study stage. The location in Câmara de Lobos depends on technical work the group is waiting for from its partners.

The centre would store and distribute food, electronics, household appliances and pharmaceutical products. It would serve businesses and end consumers, including home deliveries. The plan also includes cross-docking, in which goods are received and sent on almost at once.

Luís Torres said the region lacks enough storage space. According to him, keeping more goods on the island would reduce the wait for ships when supplies run short and avoid air freight, which he called very expensive.

Torrestir was founded in 1962 and works in logistics and in land, air and sea transport, according to Funchal Notícias and JM Madeira.
