US ambassador received in Funchal on first Madeira visit

United States ambassador to Portugal John Joseph Arrigo was received by Funchal mayor Jorge Carvalho at Funchal City Hall on 9 September in a courtesy presentation meeting. Arrigo is on an official visit to the Autonomous Region of Madeira, his first visit to the island.
Earlier that morning, Arrigo was received at Palácio de São Lourenço by the Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, Paulo Barreto. He was also scheduled to be received that day by Regional Government president Miguel Albuquerque, according to Diário de Notícias Madeira.
At City Hall, the meeting covered matters of mutual interest, including Madeira's historical connection with the United States and the growth of the North American market. The discussion also addressed that market's importance to the archipelago's economy and tourism, and described North American visitors as high-spending tourists who value culture and local products.
Arrigo was nominated by President Donald Trump and took office on 9 September of the previous year.
