The Socialist Party (PS) demands immediate action from Funchal City Council to address rising insecurity at Praça do Carmo, emphasizing the need for an integrated intervention plan and the establishment of a Municipal Police.

In a recent call to action, the Socialist Party (PS) has urged the Funchal City Council to take immediate measures to ensure safety and security in Praça do Carmo. The area has reportedly seen a surge in criminal activities, including drug trafficking, prostitution, and altercations, which have contributed to a growing sense of insecurity among residents and visitors alike.

During a municipal meeting, Rui Caetano, a PS councilor, highlighted the deteriorating situation at Praça do Carmo. He described the current conditions as "shameful," stating that they have turned the lives of many into "a living hell." Caetano strongly advocated for the implementation of a comprehensive intervention plan and the creation of a Municipal Police force to effectively combat these issues.

The call for action comes amidst increasing public concern over safety in one of Funchal’s central and historically significant squares. Praça do Carmo, known for its cultural and social vibrancy, has been a popular spot for both locals and tourists. However, the recent uptick in criminal activity has raised alarms, prompting calls for urgent intervention.

The Socialist Party’s demand underscores the urgency of addressing these issues to restore peace and safety to the area. By proposing the establishment of a Municipal Police, they aim to provide a more localized and effective approach to policing, which could help curb crime rates and ensure the safety of both residents and visitors to this iconic location.
