Urgent Call for Action on Abandoned Educational Center in Santo da Serra

Filipe Sousa, a deputy from the Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) party in the Portuguese Assembly, has formally questioned the Minister of Justice regarding the long-neglected state of the former Educational Center of Madeira (CEM), located in Santo da Serra. The institution, designed for the rehabilitation of young people, has been closed since 2013, despite having cost around 10 million euros to construct.

Built to aid in the accommodation, recovery, and reintegration of youth, the center operated for merely three years before its closure. The facility's abandonment has been a persistent concern for local residents and politicians, highlighting a significant waste of public resources.

Sousa emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation, noting that the neglect not only represents a financial loss but also a missed opportunity for community development and youth support. The JPP insists on a concrete plan from the government to revitalize the facility, either by reopening it for its intended purpose or repurposing it to serve the community's needs.

The call for action comes at a time when Madeira is focusing on improving infrastructure and public services, particularly those that can benefit both locals and the island's thriving tourist economy. Restoring the center could align with regional goals of enhancing social programs and providing additional resources for the youth.
