In a recent public meeting, Jorge Afonso Freitas, an independent councilor at the Câmara Municipal do Funchal, emphasized the need to revisit unresolved issues stemming from the devastating storm that struck Madeira on February 20, 2010. Sixteen years after the catastrophe, Freitas expressed concern over ongoing cases where residents have yet to receive adequate resolutions or explanations for their affected situations.
Freitas pointed out that the studies conducted by the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC) and the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory (LREC) after the storm identified affected properties using a traffic light system to denote severity, risk, and intervention needs. He called for a comprehensive review of these studies to assess if the recommended measures were implemented and to address any administrative oversights.
The councilor warned against normalizing the lack of progress, urging that time should not be an excuse for neglect. He proposed that the Funchal municipality should thoroughly verify all pending cases and provide a status update on each affected property, ensuring no situation remains forgotten.
This call to action is not only critical for the residents impacted by the 2010 storm but also reflects a broader need for accountability and transparency in handling public safety and infrastructure issues in Madeira.
