Technical issues remain in travel reimbursement requests

The Government of the Republic said on 16 September that the remaining problems affecting reimbursement requests for travel between the islands and the mainland are technical. It said the electronic platform is being adapted to changes introduced by Law no. 23/2026 of 1 June.

According to the Government, only technical constraints linked to the IT developments needed for full operation remain. The transitional period for the Territorial Continuity Mechanism has been extended until 30 June 2027.

The maximum eligibility ceiling is no longer applied to tickets issued from 6 June. The platform is already processing reimbursement requests for tickets issued from 6 June 2026 without a maximum eligibility limit, while CTT continues to provide alternative service and request-processing mechanisms during the transitional period.

The reimbursement scheme applies to residents, equivalent residents and students in Madeira and the Azores. On Madeira-mainland links, and on travel between the two archipelagos, the maximum fare borne by residents is 79 euros and by students is 59 euros.

The Government's statement was issued in response to questions from Socialist Party MPs Francisco César and Carlos Pereira. The electronic platform was created under a new model defined in March 2025, allowing passengers in Madeira and the Azores to submit reimbursement requests digitally. For Azores-mainland return travel, the maximum fare paid by residents is 119 euros and by students 89 euros.

On 28 August, Francisco César, leader of the PS/Azores and a member of parliament, demanded an urgent solution from the Republic's Government for continuing problems with reimbursements for Azorean air travel.
