Crane on Rua Fernão de Ornelas in Funchal narrows the pavement for months
A large crane for a building project is going up on one of Funchal's busiest shopping streets, and pedestrians will have to walk around it for the coming months.
Workers assembled a large crane on Rua Fernão de Ornelas in Funchal on Saturday morning, and pedestrians had to walk around a fenced-off work zone. Trucks, lifting equipment and a mobile crane took part, and the PSP police monitored the operation.
According to DN Madeira, preparations began on Thursday with marking out the site and building the concrete base for the crane. It will stand on the wider pavement, on the left side going downhill, and the paper expects it to restrict pedestrians for the coming months. Signs in Portuguese and English show the detours.
The crane serves the reconstruction and enlargement of a building that emptied a few months ago. The last shop to close there was the Casa das Noivas on the ground floor. The council permit posted on site, DN Madeira reports, provides for 11 units for shops, services and housing.
Funchal Notícias reported that shopkeepers and passers-by complained about safety. Council workers were pruning trees at the same time, for the crane and for the Christmas decorations. On Rua do Aljube, parking was banned from early morning for the pruning, with signs warning that cars would be towed.
