IPMA has raised its heavy rain warning to orange for the north coast of Madeira and for Porto Santo until 09:00 on Sunday. Civil Protection asks people to take precautions.

Madeira's Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) on Saturday asked people across the region to step up precautions ahead of heavy rain forecast for Saturday night and Sunday morning, 1 November.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) raised its heavy rain warning from midnight until 09:00 on Sunday. The warning is orange for the north coast of Madeira and for the island of Porto Santo. The SRPC expects worse weather, with periods of rain that will at times be heavy, especially overnight.

Civil Protection expects falling branches and trees, slippery roads from standing water and flooding in urban areas. Drains may not cope, which can flood the places that have flooded before, and retaining walls or slopes may collapse.

The SRPC gives this advice:

  • Secure loose structures such as scaffolding, billboards and anything suspended.
  • Take extra care in wooded areas, where branches and trees may fall.
  • Avoid unnecessary journeys and trips into affected areas.
  • Keep away from run-down buildings, which may collapse.
  • Drive defensively, slow down and watch for standing water on the roads.
  • Do not cross flooded areas, where people and cars can be swept into holes in the road or open manholes.
