The Socialist Party of Madeira is gearing up to present a proposal in the Funchal Municipal Assembly aimed at significantly enhancing accessibility and mobility for individuals with reduced mobility in the city. Scheduled for presentation tomorrow, this proposal seeks to address several persistent obstacles that hinder the daily movement of these citizens.
Among the identified challenges are architectural barriers, insufficient adapted parking spaces, and inappropriate occupation of reserved areas. These issues, combined with narrow sidewalks and inadequate public transport options, make routine activities challenging for those with mobility impairments.
The proposal includes a comprehensive approach to improve these conditions. Notably, it suggests increasing the number of reserved parking spaces, especially in central areas and near public services, healthcare facilities, and economic hubs. Additionally, it advocates for a parking fee exemption for those holding disability parking permits to mitigate discriminatory impacts.
The socialists also recommend extending the availability of adapted public transport services until late at night, ensuring that mobility-impaired individuals can access work, education, healthcare, culture, commerce, and community life more easily.
