In a recent development, the Socialist Party (PS) has called on the Madeira Regional Government to provide clear evidence of alleged abuses and irregularities in physiotherapy treatments. This demand comes in response to the government's decision to implement unilateral cuts in healthcare services related to physical medicine and rehabilitation.
The PS's concern stems from a significant increase—79%—in sessions for physical medicine and rehabilitation, which the government cited as the basis for its decision to restrict services. The Socialists argue that these restrictions were made without sufficient consultation with relevant professional entities.
Meeting with Professional Associations
On Friday, the PS met with the president of the Association of Superior Technicians for Diagnosis and Therapy of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This entity, which represents professionals in the field, reported that they were not consulted about the government's decision and are unaware of any specific allegations of malpractice within their units.
The association expressed concerns that the new government regulations might limit the role of therapists, as their practice now heavily depends on the structure of the medical physiatrics framework.
Political Actions and Responses
Marta Freitas, a PS deputy, announced plans to formally question the Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection to identify which clinics and units are allegedly involved in these abuses. The association has also sought a meeting with the Health Secretary to discuss the new regulations, though they have yet to receive a response.
