The Socialist Party has commended entities and professionals involved in combating drug trafficking in Madeira, highlighting recent operations and challenges faced in the region.

On June 26, 2026, the Socialist Party (PS) submitted a vote of commendation to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, acknowledging the efforts of entities and professionals engaged in the fight against drug trafficking in the region. This commendation coincided with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a day established by the United Nations to raise awareness of the need to prevent, combat, and eradicate the phenomena associated with the consumption and trafficking of illicit substances.

The PS emphasized the significant role of local entities in addressing drug-related issues, citing various operations conducted to curb the problem. Notably, the recent international operation 'Azul 2.0', led by the Polícia Judiciária, dismantled a major cocaine trafficking route through the Atlantic Ocean. This operation, unveiled on June 24, resulted in the seizure of over 465 kg of cocaine, 42 kg of hashish, two high-speed vessels, and the arrest of three suspects.

Marta Freitas, a PS deputy, highlighted the growing challenge of synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances in the region, which mirrors international trends. She pointed to the emergence of substances like 'Bloom' and the detection of previously unknown substances in Portugal as indicators of the evolving nature of drug trafficking.

The PS's vote of commendation underscores the urgent need for integrated responses encompassing health, security, and social inclusion to combat these challenges effectively. The persistent efforts of the regional authorities and professionals in tackling this issue play a crucial role in safeguarding the community.

As drug trafficking continues to adapt and evolve, the commendation serves as a recognition of the dedication and hard work of those on the frontline, emphasizing the importance of continued vigilance and innovative strategies in combating this global issue.
