Socialist Party Advocates Change in Grazing License Authority in Madeira

In a move to streamline agricultural processes, the Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-Madeira) has proposed a significant change in the management of grazing licenses. Currently, the Instituto de Florestas e Conservação da Natureza (IFCN) is responsible for issuing licenses for grazing in areas outside of designated forest perimeters. The PS-Madeira is advocating for this responsibility to be shifted to the services of Pecuária, or Livestock Services.
This proposal was unveiled by Célia Pessegueiro, the president of PS-Madeira, during her visit to the Agro-Livestock Fair in Santa, located in the municipality of Porto Moniz. This initiative forms part of the Socialist project to revise the Silvopastoral Regime in the region, aiming to enhance efficiency and local agricultural governance.
The change is particularly focused on areas near populated regions, where the management of grazing licenses has direct implications on local communities and agriculture. By transferring the responsibility to Livestock Services, the PS-Madeira believes that it can improve oversight and tailor the management process to better suit the needs of these communities.
The proposal has been presented as a step towards modernizing agricultural practices in Madeira, aligning them more closely with local needs and reducing bureaucratic hurdles that currently complicate the process of obtaining grazing licenses.
This initiative is expected to impact farmers and landowners who operate in these non-forest areas, potentially making it easier for them to secure the necessary permissions to graze livestock, which is a crucial aspect of Madeira's rural economy and cultural landscape.
