SINERGIA Opposes Privatization of Madeira's EEM in Meeting with CHEGA

The SINERGIA union, which represents energy workers in Madeira, has reiterated its firm stance against the privatization of the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM). This position was reaffirmed during a recent meeting with the CHEGA party, part of a series of discussions with political groups in Madeira's Legislative Assembly.

The meeting included key figures such as Hugo Nunes, president of CHEGA-Madeira, and Emanuel Alberto Vieira, vice-president and regional coordinator of SINERGIA. The discussions centered around the potential privatization of EEM, a topic of concern among local politicians and residents.

SINERGIA clarified that it has no knowledge of any ongoing privatization processes but emphasized its principled opposition to any such move, whether total or partial. The union argues that the energy infrastructure in Madeira is a natural monopoly, meaning it cannot be replicated or effectively competed against, making privatization a simple exchange of public for private control.

Furthermore, SINERGIA highlighted the challenges faced by renewable energy production in Madeira, such as fluctuations in wind and solar power generation. They stressed the importance of maintaining firm production capacity to ensure energy stability, a factor they believe would be compromised by privatization.

While discussing investment projects funded by the European Recovery and Resilience Facility (PRR), SINERGIA expressed satisfaction with the appropriate allocation of these funds, acknowledging their role in enhancing Madeira's energy infrastructure.

CHEGA expressed its concerns regarding any potential privatization, agreeing with SINERGIA on the necessity of keeping EEM under public management to ensure efficient and equitable energy distribution across the island.
