Madeira's emergency services have been put to the test following a series of incidents that occurred over the past two days. From road accidents to an unexpected flooding event, these occurrences have drawn attention to the island's safety and emergency preparedness.
Four-Car Collision on Via Rápida
On May 22, 2026, a significant traffic accident took place on the Via Rápida near Ponte João Gomes, involving four cars. Five individuals sustained injuries in the collision, including a woman in her 40s who was trapped in her vehicle. The Madeirense Volunteer Firefighters and the EMIR (Emergency Medical Rapid Intervention) teams were promptly on the scene, facilitating rescue operations and ensuring the injured were transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital. Fortunately, all injuries were reported to be minor.
Motorcyclist Injured in Câmara de Lobos
Earlier the same day, another accident occurred in the Parque Empresarial da Zona Oeste, Câmara de Lobos, involving a motorcycle and a truck. The 29-year-old motorcyclist sustained a suspected leg fracture. Volunteer firefighters from Câmara de Lobos responded swiftly, providing necessary medical assistance.
Flooding Incident in Monte
In addition to the road incidents, emergency services were also called to address a flooding situation in a garage on Rua Abel Marques Caldeira, Monte, early on May 21, 2026. Both the Funchal Firefighters and the Madeirense Volunteer Firefighters worked together to manage the situation, preventing further damage.
