Series of Funerals in Machico: Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Residents

The close-knit community of Machico, located on Madeira Island, is coming together this week to mourn the loss of three of its cherished residents. Maria Salomé Nunes, Maria da Conceição Gouveia Gonçalves Freitas, and Maria da Conceição dos Santos Vasconcelos have passed away, leaving behind a trail of fond memories and deep sorrow among their families and friends.

Maria Salomé Nunes, a long-time resident of Caminho do Cerrado do Gato, passed away, and her funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, 2026. Family and friends will gather at the Igreja Matriz de Machico for a remembrance service before she is laid to rest at the Municipal Cemetery of Machico.

On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the funeral of Maria da Conceição Gouveia Gonçalves Freitas will take place. The procession will begin at the Casa Mortuária da Agência Funerária in Machico and proceed to the Igreja Paroquial do Piquinho, Caramanchão, where the community will pay their final respects.

Also on Tuesday, Maria da Conceição dos Santos Vasconcelos will be remembered in a service at the Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora das Preces in Ribeira Grande. Following the service, her body will be cremated at the Cemitério de São Martinho in Funchal.

Each of these women has left an indelible mark on their community, and their families express deep gratitude for the support and condolences received from friends and fellow residents. As traditional on the island, a 7th-day memorial mass for each will be held in their respective churches, continuing the island’s customs of honoring the deceased.

Machico, a town known for its strong community ties and cultural heritage, is pausing this week to reflect on the lives of these extraordinary women who contributed greatly to the social fabric of the area.
