A series of accidents on Madeira's expressway has raised safety concerns among residents and tourists. Multiple incidents occurred near key locations, highlighting the need for increased caution.

A string of accidents on Madeira Island's expressway has sparked concerns for both residents and tourists. Over the past few days, multiple incidents have occurred, affecting traffic and raising questions about road safety measures.

Recent Incidents

The most recent accident happened on April 14, 2026, shortly after the exit for Quinta Grande, in the direction of Câmara de Lobos to Ribeira Brava. Notably, the local fire brigade was not dispatched to this incident, which suggests no serious injuries were reported.

The previous day, another accident occurred on the expressway at the Ponte dos Socorridos, heading towards Funchal. This incident resulted in one person being injured, who was promptly attended to by the Câmara de Lobos Volunteer Firefighters and transported to the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.

Additionally, on April 11, an accident occurred near the airport's bend, in the direction of Machico to Funchal. Reports indicate it was in close proximity to another incident that happened earlier the same day.

Safety Concerns

These incidents highlight the recurring safety issues on the expressway, a major route for both locals and visitors. The concentration of accidents in specific areas suggests potential problem spots that may require further investigation and improvements.

The expressway is a vital infrastructure component for Madeira, facilitating movement across the island. As such, ensuring it is safe is of paramount importance to maintain the flow of tourism and daily commutes.

Local Response

Authorities and local organizations are urged to review current road safety measures and consider additional signage or speed regulation in high-incident areas.
