In a remarkable initiative, the senior universities of Porto Moniz and Imaculado Coração de Maria conducted their first student exchange program, fostering collaboration and cultural exchange among Madeira's senior population.

The senior universities of Porto Moniz and Imaculado Coração de Maria have successfully launched their inaugural exchange program, marking a significant milestone in fostering collaboration among the senior communities of Madeira. This event, held on April 13, 2026, was the first of its kind in the region and aimed to bring together students, administrators, and local government representatives.

The initiative was born from a challenge proposed by the Parish Council of Imaculado Coração de Maria to its counterpart in Porto Moniz, who readily embraced the idea. The exchange day began with a visit to the facilities of the Porto Moniz Senior University, where participants from Imaculado Coração de Maria engaged in a yoga class, fostering health and well-being.

Following the yoga session, the group visited the Madeira Aquarium, an attraction that showcases the diverse marine life surrounding the island. The visit was followed by a communal lunch that provided a platform for social interaction and networking among attendees, including university leaders and local officials.

The highlight of the day was a lecture on financial literacy, focusing on the prevention of fraud and scams, delivered by Emanuel Câmara, a deputy in the Portuguese Assembly. This session also provided insights into the workings of this legislative body, enhancing the participants' understanding of national governance.

Both Olavo Câmara and Pedro Araújo, presidents of the involved councils, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the importance of creating innovative and structured programs for the senior population. They expressed hopes for the establishment of a RUTIS delegation in Madeira to further enhance these educational and social dynamics.

Looking forward, the exchange program is set to continue, with the next event scheduled for May at Imaculado Coração de Maria. This initiative aims to progressively include other senior universities across the region, fostering a broader network of cultural and educational exchange.
