In a recent visit to the Curral das Freiras fire station, the Regional Secretary of Health and Civil Protection, Micaela Freitas, reviewed the improvements made to the facilities. The visit aimed to assess the operational work and the enhancements in the fire station, which serve the local community and tourists visiting the picturesque area of Madeira.
Accompanied by the president of the Serviço Regional de Proteção Civil, the president of the Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos, and the president of the local Junta de Freguesia, Freitas emphasized the significance of these improvements. The upgrades were supported by the local municipality to enhance the working conditions and operational capacity of the fire station.
Significance of the Upgrades
These improvements are crucial for maintaining high levels of readiness and response to emergencies, which is vital for both the safety of residents and the many tourists who visit Curral das Freiras. The enhancements are part of a broader initiative to ensure that emergency services in Madeira are equipped and prepared to handle any situation effectively.
During the visit, Freitas also toured the old primary school in the area. Plans are underway to rehabilitate this building using community funds, transforming it into a Local Civil Protection Unit. This facility will include a Concentration and Support Zone for the Population (ZCAP) and provide adequate facilities for the Fire Detachment.
The dedication and daily mission spirit of the firefighters in the field are commendable, and their ability to respond rapidly is a testament to their professionalism.
Part of the visit highlighted the effective operation of the Special Rural Firefighting Device (DECIR), which has achieved an impressive average response time of 16 minutes to incidents this year.
