Santa Cruz Invests in Fire Prevention with €164,000 Initiative
Santa Cruz, Madeira, is investing approximately €164,000 to reduce fire risks through strategic fuel load reduction and watercourse clearing.
Santa Cruz, a picturesque municipality on Madeira Island, has announced a substantial investment of €163,847.30 aimed at reducing the risk of wildfires. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the safety and resilience of the region against fire hazards.
Led by João Aragão, the vice-president of Santa Cruz, and Renato Baptista, the municipal coordinator of Civil Protection, the project focuses on clearing and reducing fuel loads along watercourses in urban areas. The intervention covers 5,677.31 linear meters spread across 11 routes in five parishes, with a significant portion of the budget, €81,946.58, allocated to this task.
This preventive measure is crucial for Santa Cruz, as it not only aims to mitigate the risk of fires but also improves water drainage systems, which are vital for managing rainfall in this Atlantic island environment.
Madeira's unique geography and climate make it susceptible to wildfires, particularly during dry spells. The local government’s proactive approach in creating safety zones and reducing combustible materials is a significant step towards safeguarding both the natural landscape and the local communities.
Santa Cruz’s efforts reflect a growing awareness and commitment to environmental safety and sustainable urban planning, ensuring that both residents and tourists can enjoy the region's natural beauty with reduced risk.
