São Vicente, a picturesque town on Madeira Island, is set to pay tribute to one of its most illustrious sons, historian Alberto Vieira, through a conference titled 'Alberto Vieira: The Man, the Island, and the Memory'. This event is scheduled for August 27th at 4:00 PM in the Town Hall's Noble Hall.
The conference, part of the São Vicente Council Festivities 2026, aims to celebrate Vieira's extensive contributions to the historical research of Madeira and the Atlantic islands. Known for his profound studies on sugar, wine, slavery, and autonomy, Vieira's work has been instrumental in enriching the understanding of Madeira's history and identity.
Graça Alves, an esteemed writer and researcher, will lead the conference. As the current Executive Director of the Museum of Sacred Art in Funchal, Alves has an impressive background in literature and island studies, having developed significant projects at the Centre for Atlantic History Studies named after Vieira.
Vieira's academic journey began in São Vicente and took him to the University of Lisbon and later the University of the Azores, where he earned a doctorate in the History of Discoveries and Portuguese Expansion. His research has been published widely in books, journals, and conference proceedings, leaving a lasting legacy for regional and Atlantic historiography.
This initiative not only honors Alberto Vieira's work but also underscores his role in highlighting the historical and cultural significance of Madeira.
