The Ribeira Brava pier in Madeira has remained closed since May 2025, with a complete shutdown implemented from June 9, due to safety concerns over the instability of the adjacent cliffs. This prolonged closure has sparked economic repercussions for local fishermen, businesses, and maritime tourism operators, as well as tarnishing the image of the Ribeira Brava region.
The issue stems from the discovery of unstable rock formations during maintenance work, which has led to extended intervention times and increased uncertainty regarding the pier's reopening. Cátia Gouveia, a municipal deputy from the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party, has emphasized the necessity of prioritizing safety for both residents and visitors, despite the economic downsides.
Gouveia has criticized the lack of planning and clear timelines from the authorities, stating that the uncertainty is detrimental to the community. The government's response, backed by the PSD/CDS coalition, has been to affirm the essential nature of the cliff stabilization works, with costs projected at two million euros. The reopening, however, hinges on assessments by the Regional Engineering Laboratory.
The Administration of Ports of the Region (APRAM) has enforced restrictions, including a navigation ban within a 40-meter radius of the pier, citing the situation's dynamic and unpredictable nature. Meanwhile, the local council acknowledges the negative economic impact and has appealed for a swift and lasting solution from the regional government.
As the community awaits resolution, the JPP continues to advocate for safety above all, urging transparency and communication from the authorities to better manage public expectations.
