Record-Breaking Cruise Tourism Boosts Madeira's Economy

Madeira Island, a renowned tourist destination, has seen its cruise tourism sector break new records, as announced by José Manuel Rodrigues, the Secretary of Regional Economy. The Porto do Funchal has once again established itself as Portugal's leading cruise port, a crucial development for both the local economy and tourism sector.

During a recent visit aboard the Ventura, a P&O Cruises ship docked at Porto do Funchal, Rodrigues highlighted the significant increase in cruise passengers and crew numbers. Between September 2025 and May 2026, Madeira's ports welcomed 791,707 passengers, an increase of approximately 50,000 compared to the previous season. The number of cruise ship calls also rose to 344, nine more than last year.

This growth is not just a matter of prestige; it has tangible economic benefits. The cruise sector's direct economic impact on the region exceeds €60 million annually. Furthermore, the increase in visitors has encouraged cruise lines to source products locally, thus benefiting Madeira’s economy beyond tourism.

Rodrigues emphasized the challenge of addressing seasonality in cruise tourism. To this end, Madeira is planning the future electrification of its ports, allowing docked ships to connect to the local power grid, reducing emissions and operational costs. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to develop new maritime routes and enhance the port infrastructure.

The Secretary of Regional Economy also noted that the rise in passenger numbers, crew, ship calls, and turnaround operations demonstrates the confidence cruise companies have in Madeira. The region's goal is to sustain this growth by diversifying its offerings, especially during the summer months, to attract more visitors year-round.
