PSD Urges Santa Cruz Municipality to Act on Cristo Rei Restoration

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has issued a strong call to the Santa Cruz Municipality to expedite the restoration of the Cristo Rei monument in Caniço. This appeal comes as the monument, a significant cultural and historical landmark, approaches its 100th anniversary.
On Friday, PSD members, including Saturnino Sousa, visited the Cristo Rei site alongside social-democratic councilors. They emphasized the urgency of restoring the monument and insisted that the municipality assume responsibility for advancing the restoration process.
Saturnino Sousa argued that the centenary of the Cristo Rei should be marked by a fully restored monument. He rejected any attempts to shift blame onto the Regional Government or the Regional Tourism Secretariat, highlighting that a private proposal for the monument’s restoration is already with the Santa Cruz Municipality awaiting evaluation.
He further criticized the municipal government for a pattern of deflecting responsibility, urging them to make decisions that would allow the restoration process to move forward. "It is time to stop blaming others for the stagnation in Santa Cruz. Those in power must take responsibility, make decisions, and ensure processes advance," Sousa stated.
The Cristo Rei monument, an iconic statue overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, is not only a tourist attraction but also a part of the island's cultural heritage. Its restoration is seen as crucial not only for preserving local history but also for maintaining its appeal to visitors.
