In a bid to enhance wildfire prevention measures on Madeira Island, the Socialist Party (PS-Madeira) has put forward a proposal to employ directed livestock grazing. This initiative aims to complement existing land management strategies and mitigate the risk of wildfires in the region.
The announcement was made during the traditional "Festa das Tosquias" held at Terreiros, within the Poiso forest perimeter. This annual event celebrates the shearing of sheep, a practice deeply rooted in Madeira's agricultural traditions.
The party's leader emphasized the importance of integrating livestock grazing into the recently approved Regional Integrated Rural Fire Management System. This system seeks to harmonize various fire prevention strategies across the island, enhancing their effectiveness.
The proposal is set to be presented at the Regional Legislative Assembly, where it seeks formal regulation. The initiative is viewed as a practical approach to land management that leverages natural processes to reduce combustible vegetation.
