PS Madeira Criticizes Government's Withdrawal of Technical Support for Small Agricultural Projects

The Socialist Party (PS) of Madeira has raised alarms regarding a recent decision by the Regional Government to cease providing technical assistance to farmers involved in small agricultural projects. These projects, essential to the local economy, are part of the Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan (PEPAC), which aims to boost agricultural productivity and sustainability.
CĂ©lia Pessegueiro, the president of PS Madeira, highlighted the issue during a press conference in Santana, a region known for its agricultural activities. She criticized the government for not only halting the support but also for the delays, noting that PEPAC funds have been arriving two years later than promised.
Previously, farmers with projects valued up to 20,000 euros benefited from government-backed technical support to aid in their applications. Now, without this support, they are compelled to seek private consultancy services, which may not be affordable for all. This change could potentially hinder the development of small-scale agriculture on the island.
The decision has sparked concern among the local farming community, as many fear it could lead to a decrease in agricultural productivity and sustainability, crucial for both the local economy and food security in Madeira.
