The Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-Madeira) has raised concerns over the escalating oral health issues among the youth of the region. In a recent press release, the party has called for the reinstatement of the Oral Health Program in schools, which was halted in 2010.
This initiative, crucial for fostering preventive oral health habits among children, has been highlighted as a shared concern between PS-Madeira and local dental professionals. The issue was discussed in a meeting between Célia Pessegueiro, the president of PS-M, and Catarina Cortez, the president of the regional delegation of the Order of Dentists.
The Oral Health Program previously focused on educating children about oral hygiene, conducting screenings, and early evaluations. However, its suspension has coincided with a noted increase in dental problems among young people.
Another pressing issue discussed was the outdated convention between the Regional Government and the Order of Dentists, established in 1997. The PS-Madeira argues that it no longer reflects current realities and requires updating to include modern dental practices and increase financial support.
Célia Pessegueiro emphasized the importance of introducing a 'dentist voucher' system, mirroring a successful national initiative, to improve access to dental care. The current government spends approximately 350,000 euros annually on dental subsidies, a figure deemed insufficient.
The call for action comes as part of a broader effort to enhance public health infrastructure and ensure that the youth of Madeira have access to adequate dental care, reflecting the party's commitment to community well-being.
