PS-Madeira Advocates for Increased Compensation for Banana Producers

The Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-Madeira) has raised concerns regarding the compensation received by banana producers on the island. CĂ©lia Pessegueiro, the head of PS-Madeira, emphasized the need for the regional government to increase the price paid to these producers. Her statements were made during the Mostra Regional de Banana, an annual event held in Madalena do Mar, a town known for its banana cultivation.
The central issue highlighted by Pessegueiro is the disparity between the profits generated by GESBA, the entity responsible for banana sales, and the amount paid to the producers. According to her, GESBA's revenue stands at approximately 30 million euros, while only 15 million euros are distributed to the producers for the bananas they supply. Pessegueiro argued that without the producers' efforts, GESBA's operations and its current revenue would not be possible.
The call from PS-Madeira aligns with recommendations from the Competition Authority, urging the government to review and adjust the compensation framework to ensure fairness and sustainability in the banana industry. Bananas are a significant agricultural product for Madeira, contributing to the local economy and tourism sector.
