PS Demands Wastewater Treatment Station in Porto da Cruz, Madeira

The Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-Madeira) has called on the Regional Government to address the longstanding issue of wastewater treatment in the parish of Porto da Cruz. The demand was made during a press conference held at the site of an unused wastewater treatment station, constructed two decades ago but never operational.
Célia Pessegueiro, the president of PS-Madeira, criticized the Regional Government and the company Águas e Resíduos da Madeira (ARM) for neglecting the community and the environment. She highlighted that the facility, which cost three million euros, never served its intended purpose, and its equipment was removed and relocated.
As a result, untreated wastewater is being discharged into the sea near Maiata Beach, affecting a popular surfing spot and preventing the area from qualifying for the prestigious Blue Flag status, which signifies high environmental and quality standards.
Pessegueiro emphasized the dual impact on Porto da Cruz, noting the negative economic and environmental effects. The area's growing popularity among residents and tourists, as well as new local accommodations and a hotel, underscores the urgent need for a functional wastewater treatment solution.
The PS-Madeira's demand highlights the critical need for investment in environmental infrastructure to support sustainable tourism and improve living conditions for the residents of Porto da Cruz.
