PS Demands Solutions for Madeira's Health System Challenges
Madeira GuideThe PS-Madeira party is calling on the Regional Government to address the rising number of problematic discharges in hospitals, emphasizing missed opportunities for expanding healthcare facilities.
The Socialist Party of Madeira (PS-Madeira) has publicly challenged the Regional Government to provide clear solutions for the increasing number of problematic hospital discharges, a pressing issue that the region faces. This call to action comes after the government reportedly missed a significant opportunity to expand healthcare facilities under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
Célia Pessegueiro, the president of PS-Madeira, held a press conference outside the Hospital Nélio Mendonça, where she highlighted the worsening health service issues in Madeira, particularly the hospital's inability to manage emergency patients effectively due to capacity constraints.
In her statement, Pessegueiro criticized the government for not taking advantage of the PRR to create approximately 460 new beds in care homes and continuous care facilities. This shortfall has contributed to a bottleneck in hospital operations, affecting both locals and tourists who rely on these essential services.
The situation has been exacerbated by a growing demand for healthcare services, with the hospital's emergency department struggling to accommodate the influx of patients. The PS-Madeira's demands underscore a critical need for strategic planning and investment in the healthcare sector to ensure that the island's health services can meet current and future needs.
Madeira, known for its stunning landscapes and as a prime tourist destination, must address these healthcare challenges to maintain its reputation as a safe and welcoming place for visitors. The ongoing issues highlight the importance of robust infrastructure to support both the local population and the tourism industry.
We cannot ignore the needs of our healthcare system. Immediate action is required to prevent a crisis in our hospitals and ensure the well-being of both residents and tourists.
