In a dramatic rescue operation, the Portuguese Navy successfully rescued four crew members from a vessel that was found adrift approximately 130 nautical miles, or about 240 kilometers, north of Madeira Island. The incident, which occurred late on Sunday night, involved swift action by both naval and air force units.
The alert was received by the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Sub-centre in Funchal at around 23:45 on April 26, 2026, reporting that the vessel was without propulsion and lacking potable water. The crew consisted of three Spanish nationals and one Serbian national.
The Navy dispatched the patrol ship NRP Zaire and a Portuguese Air Force aircraft to the scene. The aircraft successfully located the vessel, allowing the NRP Zaire to proceed with the rescue. Fortunately, all crew members were found in good physical condition and did not require medical assistance.
Following the rescue, the high-speed vessel, which lacked any identifying marks, was towed to Madeira and subsequently seized by authorities as a precautionary measure. The local Maritime Police Command in Funchal has taken over the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the vessel's drift.
