The Porto Santo Desalination Plant, the only source of potable water for the island, is preparing to increase its production capacity to 10,000 cubic meters per day by the end of summer. This expansion aims to meet the growing demand for water, particularly from the tourism sector, which accounts for approximately 70% of the plant's output.
Located near the pier in Vila Baleira, the plant is managed by Águas e Resíduos da Madeira (ARM), a public company. The plant's increased capacity is crucial as it ensures a stable and sufficient water supply for both residents and the tourism industry, which is vital for the local economy.
Since its inception in 1980, the desalination plant has been a cornerstone of Porto Santo's infrastructure, providing an essential service to the island's community. The planned expansion reflects the ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the island's resources in the face of increasing demand.
"Only the hotels consume about 70% of the water produced by the plant," said Amílcar Gonçalves, president of ARM, highlighting the significant role tourism plays in local water usage.
Porto Santo, known for its beautiful sandy beaches and tranquil environment, attracts thousands of visitors each year.
