Political Turmoil in Santa Maria Maior: Accusations of Disorganization and Lack of Rigor
Madeira GuideThe Santa Maria Maior Parish Council faces criticism from the Socialist Party (PS) for alleged disorganization and lack of rigor during recent meetings. This has sparked political controversy in Madeira.
The Socialist Party (PS) has publicly accused the executive coalition of the Santa Maria Maior Parish Council, composed of the PSD/CDS parties, of severe disorganization and lack of professionalism. This accusation has caused significant political controversy on the island of Madeira.
The controversy emerged from a recent parish assembly meeting intended to discuss and approve the 2025 financial report and the first budget amendment for 2026. According to PS representatives, the documents provided beforehand were not only delayed but also differed from those presented during the session.
Upon identifying these discrepancies, the executive failed to offer a coherent explanation, resulting in a chaotic response. This disorganization led to the council president suspending the meeting and scheduling an extraordinary session to address these financial documents adequately.
PS members highlighted the severity of the situation, criticizing the executive's lack of preparation and professionalism. They noted that such disorganization is unprecedented within the council, especially given the coalition's lack of a majority.
Furthermore, the PS criticized the handling of the December 30 meeting minutes. They claimed that council members did not receive the minutes in advance, yet the majority proceeded to vote on approving them without proper review.
"We're facing glaring incompetence. Such lack of rigor is unacceptable, especially for a council without an absolute majority," a PS representative stated.
The PS's criticism also extended to the informal attitude of the current leadership, suggesting that the council's operations were being managed without the necessary institutional formalities and competence.
This ongoing political dispute highlights the challenges facing local governance in Madeira, particularly concerning the expectations of professionalism and accountability in public administration.
