The pigeons covered an impressive 416 nautical miles (approximately 770 kilometers) from their release point at sea back to Funchal, highlighting the island's rich tradition in this unique sport.
The event took place on Saturday, with the pigeons being released at 7:00 AM from the merchant navy ship Jaime S, owned by the Sousa Group. This company provided crucial support for the event, enabling the pigeons to embark on their challenging journey across the open ocean.
Out of the 50 pigeons that started the race, only four successfully completed the arduous journey, setting a new benchmark in the regional sport of columbofilia, or pigeon racing. This achievement underscores the resilience and navigational abilities inherent in these birds, which are celebrated in various local competitions throughout the year.
Pigeon racing, known locally as columbofilia, is a popular pastime in Madeira, drawing enthusiasts from across the island.
