Officials Warn of Rising Drug Risks in Madeira's Smartshops

In a recent press conference held in Funchal, José Matos, the coordinator of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in Madeira, highlighted the growing concerns over products sold in smartshops and tobacconists across the island. These establishments, often perceived as ordinary retail outlets, have become a focal point due to the sale of potentially dangerous substances.
The operation, aptly named ‘Not So Smart’, has brought to light the critical role of the Department of Investigation Criminal's drug and toxicology office. Their laboratory tests have been instrumental in identifying the international origins of the substances, which pose significant health risks.
Bruna Gouveia, the regional director of health, further emphasized the urgency of the situation. She warned that the normalization of access to these hazardous substances through seemingly benign stores could lead to increased consumption among the public, posing severe public health challenges.
“We're facing a situation where highly dangerous products are accessible to the public in shops perceived as normal,” Gouveia stated, underlining the deceptive nature of these outlets.
This issue is particularly pertinent for both residents and tourists, given Madeira's status as a popular tourist destination. The authorities are urging both locals and visitors to remain vigilant and informed about the potential dangers lurking behind the facade of these retail establishments.
