Nursing Union Calls for Intervention to Address Staff Shortages in Madeira

The Order of Nurses (OE) has called upon the President of Madeira's Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, to intervene in the ongoing issue of nurse recruitment. The call comes after repeated meetings with the Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection failed to yield satisfactory results.
Currently, there is a pressing need to hire approximately 80 nurses to fill vacancies in the Serviço de Saúde da Região Autónoma da Madeira (SESARAM). Despite the establishment of a recruitment reserve, the process has been stalled, prompting the OE to seek higher-level intervention.
This situation has significant implications for the healthcare system in Madeira, which is already strained by increased demand. The OE's request emphasizes the urgency of resolving bureaucratic delays to ensure adequate staffing levels are met.
The call for intervention is not the first of its kind. It follows a series of discussions throughout the year between the OE's representatives, including Luís Filipe Barreira and Teresa Espírito Santo, and Micaela Freitas from the Secretariat of Health.
SESARAM, the autonomous region’s health service, plays a critical role in providing medical care to both residents and tourists. Any disruption in staffing not only affects patient care but also impacts Madeira's reputation as a safe and reliable destination for visitors.
