New Regulations Shaping Madeira's Accommodation and Taxi Sectors

In a significant move for Funchal’s local accommodation sector, the Municipal Assembly approved new regulations this week, setting stringent rules for AL establishments. These regulations, supported by the PSD/CDS coalition and Chega, aim to halt new registrations of Local Accommodation in multi-family residential buildings, a measure intended to address housing accessibility issues.

Councilman Paulo Lobo emphasized that these rules fulfill an electoral promise, highlighting opportunities for urban rehabilitation despite the restrictions. However, not all parties are in agreement. Rosalina Bayntun from the Liberal Initiative opposed the regulation, citing concerns over investor freedom and potential negative impacts on housing availability.

Meanwhile, Liliana da Gama from the JPP criticized the lack of discussion on proposed amendments, suggesting the regulation fails to protect residents effectively. Despite 170 public contributions during the consultation phase, many feel their input was overlooked.

In a related development, the taxi sector is facing scrutiny over proposed tariff changes. The CHEGA parliamentary group has called for a hearing with the Mobility and Transport Authority to discuss these amendments. Francisco Gomes, a Madeiran deputy, expressed concerns about the impact on taxi professionals and small businesses, arguing for a balance between consumer protection and economic viability.

Gomes stresses the importance of transparency and responsibility in regulatory changes, highlighting the challenges faced by the taxi industry, including unfair competition and rising costs. The upcoming hearing aims to clarify the rationale behind the tariff adjustments and their potential effects on the industry.
