On the morning of its arrival, around 200 people gathered at the port, many of whom were Madeiran emigrants. They were thrilled to see the ship, which prominently displayed a large Portuguese flag on its mast, fluttering in the wind. The sight was both a source of pride and nostalgia for the gathered crowd.
The festivities included a performance by the new folk group from the Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento, adding to the cultural significance of the event. This club, located in New Bedford, played a key role in organizing the welcome for the ship's commander, JosĂ© LuĂs de Sousa, and his crew.
The visit to the Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento included a tour of the facilities and the Madeiran Heritage Museum. TimĂłteo Rodrigues, the president of the club, along with other board members, warmly received the guests. This cultural exchange highlighted the enduring connection between Madeira and its diaspora.
