Natural Gas Supply to Madeira Secured Amid Worker Strike

In a significant development for Madeira, six tankers filled with liquefied natural gas (LNG) are scheduled to arrive this Thursday, securing the region's energy needs amid recent industrial action. This comes after successful negotiations between the Regional Government and the workers' union, SITE Sul, representing employees of REN Atlântico.
The LNG shipments were loaded at the Sines terminal, following an agreement reached during a workers' strike that began last Sunday. The strike had initially raised concerns over possible disruptions in gas supply to Madeira, a region heavily reliant on these shipments to meet its energy demands.
José Manuel Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary of Economy, expressed satisfaction with the agreement, noting that it ensures the uninterrupted supply of natural gas, crucial for both public services and private consumption. "We are pleased with this outcome, which reflects the responsibility and proactive efforts of all parties involved," Rodrigues commented.
The negotiations involved urgent appeals to national authorities, including the Minister of Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, and were facilitated by a commission meeting last Sunday. The agreement not only covered the loading of the six tankers but also addressed the logistics of additional shipments, ensuring comprehensive supply coverage.
The arrival of these tankers, alongside other shipments, will effectively prevent potential supply shortages that could affect households, businesses, and public services in Madeira. The Regional Government has assured residents and tourists that they will continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any future disruptions.
As the tankers prepare to dock at the port of Caniçal, the local administration is also coordinating the unloading of previously shipped containers, ensuring a steady flow of natural gas into the region. This logistical effort is part of a broader strategy to enhance energy security on the island.
